Health Savings Account (HSA)
Question to SSE:
Do we want to move this under Financial, before FSA?
If you enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with HSA, you are eligible to open a Health Savings Account (HSA) through WEX.
The HSA is a tax-advantaged personal savings account, which allows you to set aside pretax dollars to pay for qualified medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision expenses you have now or in the future. Click here to learn more about the HSA before you enroll. A full list of qualified expenses is available in IRS Publication 969 and IRS Publication 502.

How the HSA Works
- Make contributions. In 2027, the IRS maximum limits on total contributions to your account are:
- Up to $4,500 for single coverage
- Up to $9,000 for all other coverage levels.
- If you are age 55 or older (or turn age 55 in 2027), you may contribute an additional $1,000 (also known as catch-up contributions).
- Shake Shack also contributes to your HSA:
- Team Member Only: $150
- Family: $300
- Never pay taxes. Contributions are made from your paycheck on a pretax basis, and the money will never be taxed when used for qualified healthcare expenses.
- It’s your money. Unused money can be carried over each year and invested for the future – with the potential to gain interest or earnings tax-free. You can even take it with you if you leave Shake Shack or retire.
- Invest your account. Once your account balance reaches $1,000, you can invest your HSA dollars to grow the balance. Note: Investment options are available in the WEX app and are determined by you.
Eligibility
To enroll in an HSA, you must:
- Have coverage through the HDHP with HSA medical plan.
- Not be covered under any other non-HDHP insurance, including a Health Care FSA (through Shake Shack or your spouse’s employer).
- Not have coverage through Medicare or TRICARE.
- Not be claimed as a dependent on anyone’s tax return.
Note: HSA contribution limits are subject to change annually as determined by the IRS. It’s important to ensure you do not go over the maximum if you have deposited funds into more than one HSA during the year. If you join the plan mid-year, we recommend prorating your annual contribution amount based on how many months you will be covered under a high deductible health plan during the year.
Action Required: Verify Your Identity to Use Your HSA
To comply with federal requirements under the Patriot Act, identity verification is required before accessing HSA funds.
Triple-Tax Advantage
Contributions go in tax-free, grow tax-free, and come out tax-free when used for qualified healthcare expenses.
